I think there is something incredibly special about a wedding in Lewes. From the historic streets and charming architecture to the beautiful gardens dotted around the town, it’s a wonderful place to get married.
I recently got the chance to shoot Abi and Jack’s wedding at the Lewes Register Office which is in the Grange (Southover Grange Gardens). This beautiful wedding began at Lewes Register Office, followed by photos in the Grange and a picnic to celebrate their special day.
As a Sussex wedding photographer and someone who lives in Lewes, Lewes Register Office is one of my favourite ceremony venues to photograph. It has a relaxed and intimate atmosphere that works perfectly for natural, beautiful wedding photography.
Wedding photography at The Grange in Lewes
The Lewes Register Office is in the Grange, so as soon as the ceremony finished, we were able to step straight out into the gardens. Here, I directed Abi and Jack around the Grange to capture different types of photos, including them together, individual ones and the complete wedding party.
The gardens are beautifully maintained throughout the year and offer a mixture of elegant pathways, historic architecture, seasonal flowers and quiet corners that work perfectly for relaxed couple portraits.
Because everything is so close together, it’s nice that I could take Abi and Jack to capture their photos without spending too much time away from their guests. This helps keep the day feeling relaxed and natural (something I think is very important for wedding photography), which always leads to more genuine photographs.
Why The Grange is Perfect for Wedding Photography
As a Lewes wedding photographer, I’m very familiar with The Grange (and some of the best locations within the gardens for natural and relaxed wedding portraits). One of the things I love most about photographing weddings here is the variety of backdrops available within such a short walking distance, making it easy to create a diverse gallery of images while keeping the experience calm and enjoyable for the couple.
From the historic architecture and pathways to the open green spaces and quieter corners of the gardens, The Grange offers plenty of opportunities for timeless photographs. It’s also an ideal setting for couples who may feel slightly nervous in front of the camera, as the relaxed atmosphere helps portraits feel natural rather than overly posed.
Where to have your wedding photos
Alongside The Grange itself, Lewes offers plenty of beautiful spots for your photos. We can wander just five minutes into the centre of Lewes, where the historic streets, flint walls, independent shopfronts and charming architecture create the perfect backdrop for natural, relaxed portraits. Lewes Castle is often a popular spot for wedding photos, as well as Cliffe Bridge, where I can capture some unique shots – in Lewes, you aren’t short of options, so depending on your brief, I can find the right location.
Accommodation & Parking at Lewes Register Office
Lewes Register Office is super convenient for guests to attend, with everything within easy walking distance. The venue is located just around 10 minutes from Lewes train station, making it easy for guests travelling from Brighton, London or elsewhere across Sussex.
There are plenty of car parks in Lewes for guests who are driving – my advice is to double-check the amount of time each of the car parks offers, as some are only two hours, whereas others are four hours or more. Mountfield Road Car Park, Pinwell Car Park, The Maltins Car Park, Phoenix Causeway and Brook Street Car Park allow you to stay for eight hours. If you need less time, Little East Street Car Park and West Gate have a max stay of four hours. Just make sure you plan ahead; this way you don’t have to drive around trying to park on the day. This map on the Lewes Council Website is useful for finding car parks.
As for accommodation options, Lewes has a selection of hotels which you can stay at as well as Airbnbs which are just a short walk away from Lewes Register Office. Popular places to stay include The White Hart Lewes and Premier Inn Lewes Town Centre, both of which are conveniently located within walking distance of the venue and town centre. Lewes also has a great range of Airbnbs and independent guesthouses, which work particularly well for wedding weekends and guests travelling from further away.
