Recently, I had the opportunity to provide event photography at The Depot in Lewes, one of East Sussex’s most distinctive venues. At its heart, The Depot is an independent cinema, but it is much more than that. Alongside its popular cinema, the venue is home to a vibrant restaurant, bar and outdoor courtyard, creating a welcoming space for everything from film screenings and community events to private functions and live experiences.
For photographers, The Depot offers a unique backdrop. Its contemporary architecture, industrial-inspired design and versatile event spaces create plenty of opportunities to capture authentic moments and the atmosphere of an event as it unfolds. I’ve been lucky enough to capture a few for The Depot recently.
The first was Dalliance, The Depot’s weekly live music and street food event, which brought together great food, entertainment and a lively social atmosphere. The second was a Phantom of the Opera Soirée, an elegant and immersive evening inspired by the iconic musical. While the events couldn’t have been more different in style and mood, both highlighted the versatility of The Depot as an event venue and provided fantastic opportunities to capture genuine moments and memorable experiences.
Photographing Dalliance at The Depot Lewes
Dalliance is one of The Depot’s most popular regular events, combining live music, street food and a welcoming social atmosphere. As an event photographer, it provided countless opportunities to capture candid moments, audience interactions and the vibrant energy that makes the event such a success. From guests enjoying food and drinks in the courtyard to musicians performing live, every aspect of the evening helped tell the story of the event.
Phantom of the Opera Soirée Photography
The Phantom of the Opera Soirée transformed The Depot into an atmospheric tribute to one of cinema’s most enduring classics. Inspired by the grandeur of the Paris Opera House, guests were invited to step into a candlelit setting for an evening that combined film, live music and fine dining.
The event followed a screening of the 1925 silent film The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, accompanied by a live score from composer Paul Robinson of HarmonieBand. Guests then enjoyed a specially curated three-course meal inspired by the elegance and drama of the film, creating a truly immersive experience that blended cinema and dining.
From a photography perspective, the soirée presented a completely different challenge to the lively atmosphere of Dalliance. The lighting within the cinema was significantly darker, requiring careful camera settings and a discreet approach to ensure I could capture key moments without interrupting the experience for guests.
Why The Depot Works So Well for Events
I often visit The Depot, and one of the reasons it’s become such a popular venue in Lewes is its ability to feel both modern and welcoming at the same time. While the building has a contemporary design and excellent facilities, it never feels intimidating or pretentious. Instead, it has a relaxed atmosphere that encourages people to settle in, whether they’re attending a film screening, enjoying a meal, meeting friends for a drink or taking part in a special event – my little one, Theo, loves the Bluey screenings that they put on.
One of the venue’s greatest strengths is its versatility. The Depot isn’t just a cinema; it offers a range of spaces that can be adapted for everything from private screenings and corporate events to weddings, parties and community gatherings. Alongside its cinema screens, there is a stylish bar, restaurant, gallery space, studio and beautiful walled garden, giving event organisers plenty of options depending on the size and style of their event.
From a photography perspective, this flexibility makes The Depot particularly appealing. The variety of spaces provides different backdrops and lighting conditions, helping create a diverse collection of images while still maintaining a cohesive feel throughout an event. Whether guests are networking at a conference, celebrating a special occasion or enjoying a themed evening such as the Phantom of the Opera Soirée, the venue offers plenty of opportunities to capture natural interactions and memorable moments.
